Best Things to Do in Galapagos: Wildlife, Snorkel, Beaches & Adventure
Published: · JPM

From snorkeling with sea lions and hiking volcanoes to diving, kayaking, yacht tours, beaches and wildlife cruises, these are some of the best ways to experience Galapagos.
Search for things to do in Galapagos and you will quickly find giant Galapagos tortoises, snorkeling and Kicker Rock. All deserve to be there, but Galapagos offers much more than a short list of famous attractions.
You can spend one morning hiking across a volcanic landscape and the next snorkeling among sea turtles. You can kayak beside cute Galapagos penguins, sail to North Seymour aboard a comfortable yacht, relax on a white-sand beach, discover local seafood or spend several days exploring remote islands on a Galapagos cruise.
The key is choosing the experiences that fit your travel style, activity level and number of days.
At Smart Galapagos, we design Island Hopping and cruise journeys for adventure travelers, families, couples, seniors, divers and private groups, so here is our local guide to the experiences worth considering.

1. Watch Galapagos Wildlife in the Wild
This is still the number-one reason most people come.
Giant Galapagos tortoises roam the Santa Cruz Highlands, sea lions occupy beaches and waterfronts, marine iguanas sun themselves on black lava and blue-footed boobies can be found at remarkable visitor sites such as North Seymour or Lobos Island.
The best wildlife experience is rarely about chasing one animal. It is about choosing the right visitor sites with a Smart itinerary made for you.
North Seymour, for example, is one of our favorite full-day yacht experiences for frigate-birds, blue-footed boobies, land iguanas and sea lions.
2. Snorkel in One of the World's Most Extraordinary Marine Environments
Snorkeling can easily become the highlight of a Galapagos trip.
Some of our favorites include Lava Tunnels & Cabo Rosa on Isabela, Santa Fe, Pinzón, Tintoreras and Kicker Rock. Depending on location and conditions, you may encounter sea turtles, rays, sea lions, reef sharks, marine iguanas, tropical fish and occasionally penguins.
Wildlife is wild, so specific sightings can never be guaranteed.
For many smart travelers, the best itinerary mixes several snorkeling environments rather than visiting only one famous site.
3. Go Scuba Diving
For certified divers, Galapagos can become an entirely different destination.
Smart Galapagos offers Galapagos Diving experiences, including day dives as an upgrade to any of our Island Hopping tours, Diving Island Hopping programs and liveaboards.
Gordon Rocks is one of the best-known dive sites accessible from Santa Cruz, while Kicker Rock is another exciting option available on all our Galapagos 360 tours. Experienced divers looking for the most remote diving can consider liveaboards reaching Wolf and Darwin.
Our 8 Day Diving Galapagos 360, for example, combines diving with a broader Island Hopping experience rather than making every day exclusively about diving.

4. Kayak Along Volcanic Coastlines
Kayaking lets you explore Galapagos at a completely different pace.
Around Tintoreras on Isabela, you can paddle through volcanic coastal scenery while looking for sea lions, turtles, rays and penguins. Other kayaking opportunities can be incorporated around inhabited islands depending on itinerary and conditions.
It works particularly well in a Multi-Sport Galapagos tour, where kayaking is combined with snorkeling, hiking and yacht excursions.
Some Smart Galapagos Cruises also offer Kayaking as a regular part of their experience, just let us know you would like to experience it and we will find you a cruise with amazing kayaking activities.
5. Hike Sierra Negra and Volcán Chico
Galapagos is not only about animals.
Isabela's volcanic interior is one of the best places to understand how these islands were created. The hike through Sierra Negra and Volcán Chico crosses dramatic lava terrain and gives active travelers a completely different perspective from the marine excursions.
For travelers who love hiking, we can customize your tour to include this unique 17km, 4h30minute hike to this amazing active volcano.
Talk with a Galapagos travel assistant to customize your tour at no additional cost.
6. Explore North Seymour and Bartolome by Yacht
One of the best advantages of staying on Santa Cruz is access to outstanding full-day yacht tours.
North Seymour is primarily about wildlife: frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies, iguanas and sea lions. Then we relax at the beautiful Bachas beach or enjoy some snorkeling after lunch.
Bartolome is different. The volcanic landscape and famous Pinnacle Rock make it one of the most recognizable views in Galapagos, and the day normally combines the island visit with snorkeling.
Depending on the itinerary, Smart Galapagos can also include Santa Fe, South Plazas, Chinese Hut, Española and Pinzón, with higher-category yachts available in our Superior and Luxury trips.
7. Take a Multi-Sport Galapagos Adventure
If sitting still is not your idea of a vacation, combine everything.
A Galapagos Adventure tour can include snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, cycling or e-bikes, wildlife walks, diving, superior yacht excursions and beach time.
Our longer Galapagos 360 and Mega 360 itineraries work particularly well because Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristobal each add very different landscapes and activities.
The result feels less like a conventional tour and more like a new adventure every day.

8. Slow Down: Beaches, Relaxation and Free Time
You do not need an excursion every morning and afternoon.
Tortuga Bay, Puerto Villamil's long beach on Isabela and the beaches around San Cristobal give you time to simply enjoy where you are.
For couples, families and seniors in particular, we often prefer mixing active days with slower afternoons rather than trying to fill every available hour.
That balance can completely change how the trip feels.
9. Try Paddleboarding, Cycling or E-Bikes
Smaller activities can be some of the most enjoyable parts of a customized Galapagos trip.
Depending on your island and availability, we can incorporate stand-up paddleboarding, regular bicycles or e-bikes into free time or a Multi-Sport itinerary.
They are especially useful when you want an active experience without committing to another full-day boat tour.
10. Discover Galapagos Through Local Food
Island Hopping has one major advantage that cruise travelers experience less often: you eat and spend your evenings in the island towns.
Puerto Ayora, Puerto Villamil and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno each have amazing restaurants where delicious seafood and Ecuadorian ingredients meet local island life.
We like including carefully selected restaurants with special seaside dinners. For couples and families, these evenings can be as memorable as another excursion.
11. Try Experiential Fishing
Fishing inside the Galapagos Marine Reserve is strictly regulated.
Visitors cannot simply fish from a tourism yacht. When included, fishing must be through an authorized experiential fishing operation and follow Galapagos National Park regulations.
For travelers interested in this experience, we can check what authorized options are available around their dates and build it into the itinerary appropriately.

12. Choose a Family Galapagos Adventure
Galapagos works extremely well for families because the same trip can mix wildlife, learning, beaches and adventure.
Our Galapagos Family tours can be adapted around children's ages, swimming ability and energy levels. One family may want snorkeling and kayaking every day; another may prefer giant tortoises, gentle yacht excursions and more beach time.
Private family group tours or private cruise charters can also be designed around their own pace.
13. Explore Galapagos at a More Comfortable Pace
Galapagos does not need to be physically demanding.
For seniors or travelers who simply prefer a more relaxed journey, we can prioritize premium ocean front hotels, yacht excursions, giant tortoise visits, beaches, shorter walks and carefully paced wildlife days.
Activities such as Sierra Negra or rougher marine excursions remain optional.
The goal is to choose the right activities for you.
14. Take a Multi-Day Galapagos Cruise
Island Hopping is only one way to explore the islands.
A Galapagos cruise lets the vessel navigate between visitor sites while you sleep or relax onboard, opening access to remote locations that are difficult or impossible to reach on a normal land-based trip.
Smart Galapagos offers different cruise categories, from more affordable expedition vessels through Tourist Superior and First Class to Premium and Luxury yachts, with itineraries ranging from shorter 4 day cruises to extended 15 or more day journeys.
A 5 day cruise can combine beautifully with Island Hopping, while an 8 to 10 day cruise is one of our favorite lengths for a more complete cruise experience. Longer itineraries can explore even more of the archipelago when the itinerary is carefully selected.

Island Hopping or Cruise: Which Gives You More Things to Do?
Both options are great, we just have to select the best one for you and your travel group.
Island Hopping gives you hotels, delicious local restaurants, free evenings, beaches and tremendous flexibility to combine snorkeling, diving, kayaking, hiking and yacht tours.
Cruises reach more remote visitor sites like Genovesa or Fernandina Islands, and allow you to explore a different location almost every day without repeatedly changing hotels.
And you do not necessarily have to choose between them, at Smart Galapagos we specialize in combining a great Cruise with an amazing Island hopping tour.
For many travelers, one of the most complete Galapagos experiences is a short cruise combined with several days of Island Hopping, especially when the cruise route and land itinerary are selected to complement rather than duplicate each other. You can check out the full comparison guide here.

For us, the smart question is not simply “What are the best things to do in Galapagos?”
It is:
Which Galapagos experiences are best for you?
That is where smart planning becomes important.
Tell your Galapagos Travel Assistant what you enjoy, how active you want to be, the wildlife you most want to see, how many days you have and what is the maximum budget you would have per person. We can then build the islands, visitor sites and activities around you rather than forcing you into a generic itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best things to do in Galapagos?
Some of the best Galapagos experiences include wildlife watching, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, hiking volcanic landscapes, visiting giant tortoises, relaxing on beaches, exploring uninhabited islands by yacht and taking a multi-day Galapagos cruise.
What activities can you do on a Galapagos Island Hopping tour?
Depending on the itinerary, Island Hopping can combine snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, cycling, diving, wildlife tours, yacht excursions, beach time, delicious local gastronomy and free time on Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristobal.
Is Galapagos good for adventure travel?
Yes. Galapagos is especially good for travelers who enjoy combining marine and land activities. A Multi-Sport adventure itinerary like our 8 Day - Galapagos 360 - Ideal tour can include snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, cycling, diving and wildlife excursions in the same journey.
Can seniors and families enjoy Galapagos without doing difficult activities?
Absolutely. An itinerary can focus on comfortable yacht tours, giant tortoise reserves, beaches, shorter walks and easier snorkeling while leaving strenuous hikes or more demanding water activities optional.

It depends on your priorities. Island Hopping offers more flexibility, hotels, restaurants and local island life, while a cruise reaches more remote visitor sites efficiently. Combining both can provide an exceptionally complete experience.
How many days should I spend in Galapagos?
For most first-time visitors, 8 to 10 days gives a good balance of islands and activities without rushing. Shorter 4 to 6 day trips can focus on one or two islands, while 12 to 15 days allow a much deeper Island Hopping or cruise combination.
