Galapagos in March: Weather, Wildlife, Snorkeling & Smart Travel Tips

Is March a good month to visit the Galapagos Islands?

For me, personally, absolutely. March is especially attractive if you enjoy warm weather, warmer ocean temperatures, snorkeling, green landscapes and active wildlife.

It falls right in the Galapagos warm season, when the islands feel more tropical and the ocean is generally more inviting for swimming and snorkeling. March can also bring rain, but that rain transforms parts of the normally dry volcanic landscape into a surprisingly green environment.

There is also an interesting difference between traveling at the beginning and end of the month. Early and mid-March are excellent for warm-water adventures, while late March begins one of Galapagos' most anticipated wildlife transitions: the return of waved albatross to Española.

What Is the Weather Like in Galapagos in March?

March is one of the warmest and wetter periods in Galapagos.

Days are normally warm and can feel quite tropical because of the humidity. Rain showers are possible, particularly in the highlands, but conditions vary considerably between islands and elevations.

The positive side of the rain is immediately visible: the islands become greener.

Santa Cruz Highlands and vegetated areas of Isabela can look completely different from the dry-season landscape many travelers imagine when they think of Galapagos.

Do not underestimate the sun, however. Galapagos sits directly on the equator, so good sun protection remains essential even when clouds come and go.

For a full comparison with the rest of the year, read our Best Time to Visit Galapagos: Weather, Wildlife & Seasons or explore the Galapagos Month-by-Month Guide.

Smart Tip: March is warm, but that does not mean you should pack only beach clothes. Bring a lightweight waterproof layer for occasional showers and something comfortable for early-morning yacht departures.

Is March Good for Snorkeling in Galapagos?

This is one of the main reasons we like March.

The warm-season ocean is generally more comfortable than during the cooler months, which can make a real difference if you plan to spend several days snorkeling.

And in Galapagos, snorkeling is not usually one isolated activity. On a well-designed Island Hopping itinerary, you can experience completely different marine environments within the same trip.

Our 8 Day Galapagos 360 Tour “A” – Ideal, for example, combines snorkeling around Santa Fe, Cabo Rosa/Lava Tunnels, Isabela and San Cristobal, together with kayaking, wildlife walks, volcanoes and a scenic inter-island flight.

Possible encounters may include sea turtles, rays, reef sharks, sea lions and many tropical fish. Penguins can also be seen around Isabela, although, as with all wildlife in Galapagos, individual sightings can never be guaranteed.

If penguins are especially important to you, read our guide to Galapagos Penguins: Facts & Best Places to See Them.

What Wildlife Can You See in Galapagos in March?

March is an interesting wildlife month because it sits deep within the warm season while several species are breeding, nesting or preparing for the months ahead.

Green sea turtles are within their nesting period, marine iguanas remain active, Giant Galapagos tortoises can be observed throughout the year, and seabirds are present across many visitor sites.

Then there is Española.

Toward the end of March, start of May, the first waved albatross begin returning to their breeding grounds. That does not mean we would promise an albatross sighting on a March itinerary — wildlife does not follow an exact calendar — but it makes late March particularly interesting for travelers who want to include Española.

Smart Tip: Do not choose March only because of one animal. Tell us the three or four species you most want to see, and we can prioritize the islands and visitor sites that give you the best realistic opportunities.

Early March or Late March?

This is one of the most useful distinctions when planning a March trip.

Early to Mid-March

Choose this period if your priorities are:

  • Warm water and snorkeling
  • Beaches
  • Green landscapes
  • Family travel
  • Avoid Sea-Sickness with calm waters
  • Island Hopping
  • A tropical Galapagos experience

Late March

Late March offers the same warm-season advantages but becomes especially interesting if Española and waved albatross are important to you.

The first birds generally begin returning late in the month, before the main breeding period becomes more established in April and the following months.

For us, that makes the question less about whether early or late March is “better” and more about what you want your trip to include.

What Our Travelers Say About Visiting Galapagos in March

We can talk about weather charts and wildlife calendars all day, but feedback from people who actually traveled during the month is just as useful.

One Smart Galapagos traveler visited as a couple in March 2026 on our 6 Day Galapagos Wisdom Tour and later wrote:

“Amazing couple tour to Galapagos on March 2026. We did the Galapagos Wisdom tour 6 days and it was superb. Isabela is special.”

This Smart traveler specifically recommended the Lava Tunnels in Isabela and noted that this was already their second trip with Smart Galapagos, which makes us so happy :)

Another couple traveling in March explored Santa Cruz, Bartolome, Isabela, San Cristobal and Española and highlighted how impressive the wildlife and natural experiences were both above and below the water.

About Smart Galapagos

Why Traveler Feedback Matters to Us

Smart Galapagos has helped more than 1,500 travelers explore the islands and received 450+ five-star reviews across four main review platforms.

Perhaps even more important to us, approximately 40–50% of our travelers come from past-guest referrals and recommendations.

That means a large part of our business is built on someone returning home and telling a friend or family member:

“You should definitely travel with them.”

We take that seriously. Feedback from previous guests also helps us understand which hotels, yachts, excursions and itinerary combinations are working particularly well in real travel conditions — not just on paper.

Island Hopping or Cruise in March?

Both can be excellent.

Galapagos Island Hopping allows you to stay on islands such as Santa Cruz, Isabela and San Cristobal while combining hotels, local restaurants and yacht-based day tours.

For March, we particularly like this option for travelers interested in snorkeling, beaches, Isabela and a mixture of marine and land activities.

On a Galapagos cruise your yacht will travel while you sleep or eat, giving you access to more remote visitor sites and making it easier to combine several regions of the archipelago.

If late-March albatross are one of your main goals, for example, we would look carefully at Southern Galapagos cruise itineraries that include Española and Punta Suarez.

And for many travelers, combining a Cruise + Island Hopping gives the most complete experience: remote cruise visitor sites combined with a few nights on Isabela or another inhabited island. It just makes your travel a smarter alternative.

Is March Good for Families?

Yes, particularly for families who enjoy being in the water.

Warmer ocean conditions can make snorkeling more comfortable for children and adults who are sensitive to colder water. March also gives families a good balance of wildlife, beaches, kayaking, short hikes and yacht excursions.

When traveling with small kids, the smart thing is not trying to do everything.

A good family itinerary should balance active days with enough free time to enjoy the islands rather than turning every day into an expedition.

What Should You Pack for Galapagos in March?

Think warm weather + strong sun + water activities + occasional rain.

Bring lightweight breathable clothing, swimwear, a rash guard, good sun protection, comfortable walking shoes, sandals or water shoes and a light waterproof jacket.

A small dry bag can also be useful during yacht excursions and transfers.

For the complete list, see our Galapagos Packing Guide.

Smart Tip: March humidity and equatorial sun can make a day feel hotter than expected. Carry water on excursions and be especially careful with sun exposure on yacht decks, beaches and volcanic trails.

So, Is March a Good Time to Visit Galapagos?

For many travelers, yes — very much so.

We especially recommend March if you value:

Warm water, snorkeling, tropical weather, greener landscapes, beaches and active wildlife.

Early and mid-March work particularly well for warm-weather Island Hopping and snorkeling trips. Late March adds another interesting possibility as waved albatross begin returning to Española.

But there is no universally perfect month in Galapagos. The best month depends on what you want to experience.

Rather than choosing a date first and hoping the itinerary works, we prefer to start with your wildlife priorities, activities, comfort level and available time — and build the trip from there.
