Discover where to see giant tortoises in the Galapagos, when to visit and which Island Hopping and cruise itineraries can include them.
Updated September 2026 · JPM

When people think of the Galapagos Islands, the giant tortoise is often one of the first animals that comes to mind. Seeing one in its natural environment is a memorable experience, especially when you encounter these enormous, peaceful animals moving through the highlands among volcanic landscapes and lush vegetation.
The good news is that giant tortoises are relatively easy to include in a Galapagos itinerary. Whether you choose Island Hopping or a Galapagos cruise, several itineraries offer opportunities to see them in the wild or visit important tortoise areas.
At Smart Galapagos, we can help you choose an itinerary based on where you want to see giant tortoises, how much time you have and the other experiences you want to include in your trip.
Why Are Galapagos Giant Tortoises So Big?
The first time you see a Galapagos giant tortoise up close, you immediately understand why they are called giants. These enormous animals evolved on isolated islands where adult tortoises faced few natural predators and had access to abundant vegetation.
Giant tortoises are herbivores and can live for many decades. Over time, their isolation on different islands contributed to the development of distinct tortoise populations, each adapted to its own environment. Their impressive size is only one part of what makes them so fascinating.
Standing beside one in the wild gives you a very different perspective. You are not simply seeing a large animal; you are seeing one of the species that has become deeply connected to the story of evolution and conservation in the Galapagos.
Where Can I See Giant Tortoises in Galapagos?
There are several islands where you can encounter Galapagos giant tortoises, but Santa Cruz is often the easiest place to include a tortoise experience in an itinerary, especially for travelers arriving through Baltra Airport. The highlands provide accessible opportunities to see tortoises in protected areas where they roam through their natural environment.

Santa Cruz Island
The Santa Cruz highlands are one of our favorite places for a giant tortoise encounter. On many Smart Galapagos Island Hopping itineraries, travelers can arrive at Baltra Airport and visit the highlands on the same day. In areas such as El Chato and other private reserves, giant tortoises can be seen moving freely through the vegetation.
For many travelers, this is their first opportunity to see a giant tortoise in Galapagos, and the experience can be surprisingly simple: you walk through the highlands, look into the vegetation and suddenly find an enormous tortoise only a few meters away.
Isabela Island
Isabela is another important destination for giant tortoises, particularly for travelers who also want to experience volcanoes and other wildlife. Different tortoise populations are associated with several of the island's volcanoes, and there are also tortoise conservation areas around Puerto Villamil.
What makes Isabela especially interesting is the combination of experiences. A visit can bring together giant tortoises with volcanic landscapes, hiking, penguins, marine iguanas, sea lions and snorkeling.
San Cristobal Island
San Cristobal also offers opportunities to see giant tortoises, including at the Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado. For travelers whose itinerary already includes San Cristobal, this can be a valuable addition to a broader wildlife experience, especially when combined with the island's other natural attractions.
The important thing to remember is that you do not need to choose a trip solely around tortoises. The right itinerary can allow you to experience giant tortoises while also exploring the other landscapes and wildlife that make each island different.
When Is the Best Time to See Giant Tortoises?
Giant tortoises can be seen in the Galapagos throughout the year, so there is no specific month you need to target simply to see them. Their behavior can vary with seasonal conditions, but tortoise sightings are not tied to a single short viewing season.
Because of this, we recommend choosing your travel dates based on the complete Galapagos experience you want rather than planning your trip solely around giant tortoises. Weather conditions, snorkeling, hiking, other wildlife and the islands you want to visit can all be part of that decision.
The good news is that if giant tortoises are high on your list, they can be included in a Galapagos itinerary at any time of year. The key is choosing an itinerary that takes you to the right places and combines the tortoise experience with the other activities and destinations you want to enjoy.
Island Hopping vs. a Galapagos Cruise
Island Hopping and Galapagos cruises offer two different ways to explore the islands, and the right choice depends on the kind of experience you want to have as a couple. With Island Hopping, you stay in hotels on the inhabited islands and travel between them for individual excursions. With a cruise, your yacht is also your accommodation, allowing you to continue exploring while you move between visitor sites.
For couples, Island Hopping can offer more flexibility in how you spend your time. You can choose your hotel, enjoy local restaurants, explore towns such as Puerto Ayora, Puerto Villamil and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, and adjust parts of your itinerary around your interests. Galapagos Cruises, meanwhile, make it easier to reach more remote areas and visit several destinations without changing hotels.
| Feature | Island Hopping | Galapagos Cruise |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | Hotels | Yacht |
| Flexibility | High | More structured |
| Time in local towns | More | Limited |
| Hotel selection | Flexible | One vessel |
| Customization | High | More limited |
| Budget control | More flexible | Less flexible |
| Wildlife | Excellent | Excellent |
| Snorkeling | Excellent | Excellent |
| Number of islands | Depends on itinerary | Often more |
For couples who value freedom, local experiences and the ability to shape their trip around their preferences, Island Hopping can be an attractive option. A cruise may be more suitable for travelers who prioritize reaching remote islands and experiencing Galapagos as a continuous expedition at sea.
There is no single right way to explore the Galapagos. The important thing is choosing the travel style that fits your priorities as a couple.
Which Is the Best Galapagos Experience for Giant Tortoises?
If seeing giant tortoises is one of your main priorities, we would generally start by looking at Island Hopping itineraries that include Santa Cruz. The island is convenient for travelers arriving through Baltra and offers accessible opportunities to visit the highlands and see tortoises, making it relatively easy to incorporate this experience into a broader trip.
If you also want to explore volcanoes and experience more of Isabela, adding the island to your itinerary can bring together giant tortoises with volcanic landscapes and other wildlife. San Cristobal can also be a good option when it is already part of your route, particularly if you want to visit the Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado.
Cruises can also provide excellent tortoise encounters, but the specific itinerary matters. Some routes include Santa Cruz, Isabela or San Cristobal, while others focus more heavily on remote islands and marine wildlife.
At Smart Galapagos, we do not recommend a cruise simply because it is a cruise, or Island Hopping simply because it is our specialty. We look at your complete trip and help you choose the itinerary that best matches the experiences you want to have.
Who Will Love Seeing Giant Tortoises?
Giant tortoises are one of the Galapagos experiences that can appeal to almost any type of traveler. For families, seeing such a large wild animal relatively close to the main towns can be especially memorable, while wildlife lovers have the opportunity to observe one of the archipelago's most iconic species in its natural environment.
Photographers will appreciate their size, textures and distinctive appearance, and travelers who are not looking for strenuous hiking can often enjoy tortoise-viewing experiences without a demanding physical activity.
But perhaps the most special part is simply seeing a giant tortoise where it belongs. You are not looking at an animal behind a fence or in a zoo; you are standing in the Galapagos highlands, watching a wild tortoise slowly move through the vegetation.
That is what makes the experience so memorable: you are witnessing one of the symbols of the Galapagos in its natural environment.
Why We Love Giant Tortoises in Galapagos
There are many spectacular animals in the Galapagos, from penguins and sea lions to marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds. But giant tortoises have a different kind of presence. Their size, slow movements and unmistakable appearance make them one of the animals most closely associated with the identity of the islands.

Perhaps it is simply the feeling of standing beside an animal that has lived for decades and watching it move slowly through the highlands. There is something remarkably peaceful about the experience, especially when you see a giant tortoise in its natural environment rather than in captivity.
And one of the things we love most is that you do not need a special expedition to see them. Giant tortoises can be included in many Galapagos trips, whether you choose Island Hopping or a cruise, making them one of the most accessible and memorable wildlife experiences in the archipelago.
